Why Built to Thrive Exists

Most small business owners do not struggle because they lack effort. They struggle because business setup, financial records, tax responsibilities, repeated work, and important decisions are often handled in different places and reviewed only when pressure builds.

Built to Thrive helps make those responsibilities easier to identify, understand, and act on.

The goal is practical: see what needs attention, understand the next step, and use the right guide or tool to move the work forward.

Clarity reduces friction. Structure reduces stress.

Larry Cooper, Founder of Built to Thrive

For more than four decades, I worked across business transformation, financial systems, operations, project delivery, process improvement, and organizational learning. My experience includes complex initiatives with Canadian public- and private-sector organizations, along with writing, teaching, and helping teams turn difficult problems into clearer, more workable systems.

After retiring, I created Built to Thrive as a way to share what I had learned and give something practical back to Canadian small business owners. Much of the site is free because its first purpose is educational: to help owners understand what needs attention, ask better questions, and take a sensible next step. Paid tools provide more structured support for owners who want to work through an issue in greater depth.

Built to Thrive is an educational system designed to help owners identify what needs attention, understand the issue, and take a practical next step.

Built to Thrive organizes small business responsibility into four connected areas:

Built to Thrive is designed for Canadian owners who want practical clarity—not generic business theory. It is especially useful for:

  • sole proprietors and side-business owners;
  • incorporated owner-operators;
  • consultants and professionals;
  • trades and service businesses;
  • small shops, studios, and teams.

You do not need to become an accountant, lawyer, operations consultant, or strategist. You do need enough structure to understand what is happening, what needs attention, and what to do next.

Built to Thrive begins with official Canadian sources, including the Canada Revenue Agency, federal and provincial government websites, and relevant regulatory authorities. Information is compared across sources and reviewed for differences based on location, business structure, and individual circumstances. An Official Links page contains a subset of those sources.

Where the answer depends on the specific facts of a business, the content identifies the questions an owner may need to discuss with a qualified professional.

Built to Thrive provides education and practical decision-support tools. It does not replace legal, tax, accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, employment, financial-planning, or other professional advice.

Professional advice may be needed when a decision involves taxes, incorporation, contracts, employees, financing, regulatory requirements, or circumstances specific to your business. Built to Thrive helps you become better organized and better prepared for those conversations.

You do not need to work through the site in order or fix everything at once. Start with the issue creating the most uncertainty, friction, or pressure.

Start where you are. Build from there.
